Added sugar in Starbucks Drinks
The most appealing and delicious drinks on the Starbucks menu are those with the highest concentrations of added sugars. Yes, this is true.
We all know that although delicious is the best part, the downside is dealing with the increase in calories and the crash of energy that may occur after drinking an extremely sweet drink. Additionally, having excess sugar can cause harm to the overall health of our bodies, leading to weight gain that is not desired and raising the risk of chronic illnesses over time.
Of course, let’s not forget that sugar is close to a drug, and it’s effortless to get addicted but a tough habit of stopping.
The recommended daily consumption of added sugar, as per the American Heart Association, is 25 grams (about 6 teaspoons) for women and the equivalent of 36 grams (about 9 teaspoons) for males.
Starbucks acknowledges the fact that because someone wishes to be conscious of sugar, it doesn’t mean that they need to be restricted to serving coffee that is black espresso and sugar-free tea. The company has ensured that its menu is filled with options from 0 to 60+ grams of sugar (depending on the cup size). Starbucks does not include added sugar amounts in its menu. Therefore some of the sugars in the drinks could be derived from milk. However, most of it comes from added sugar, sweeteners, and syrups.
Starbucks Syrups Nutrition Stats
Before I present you with the list of Starbucks low sugar drinks, I first want to look at the syrups used there.
I collected as much information about them as possible so that you can see how much sugar and calories each syrup contains.
As you will see, the Nutrition Stats in the table are for 1 pump or 2 tbsp, depending on the type of syrup.
STARBUCKS SYRUPS | SUGAR / PUMP | CALORIES / PUMP |
Caramel Sauce | 5g | 20 |
Pumpkin Spice Sauce | 5g | 33 |
White Chocolate Mocha Sauce | 11g | 60 |
Mocha Sauce | 4g | 25 |
Vanilla Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Apple Brown Sugar Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Brown Sugar Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Classic Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Cinnamon Dolce Syrup | 19g (2 tbsp) | 80g (2 tbsp) |
Irish Cream Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Honey Blend Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Hazelnut Syrup | 5g | 20 |
Toffee Nut Syrup | 16g (2 tbsp) | 70 (2 tbsp) |
Peppermint Flavor Syrup | 17g | 70 (2 tbsp) |
Chestnut Praline Syrup | 20g | 90 (2 tbsp) |
Okay, now that we’ve looked at syrups containing sugar, I’m going to show you some syrups that don’t contain sugar. Note that Starbucks drinks use a different amount of syrup pumps depending on the size of the cup you choose. I.e. in one drink, you can have between 2 and 6 pumps of syrup. In this way, 5g per pump is not at all small.
The good thing is that you can count on several types of syrup that are sugar-free.
Just remember to tell the barista before they start making your drink.
STARBUCKS SUGAR FREE SYRUPS | SUGAR / PUMP | CALORIES / PUMP |
Sugar Free Caramel Syrup | 0g | 0 |
Sugar Free Mocha Syrup | 0g | 5 |
Sugar Free Hazelnut Syrup | 0g | 0 (2 tbsp) |

How to Make Starbucks Drinks Healthier with Less Sugar?
- Substitute the ordinary vanilla syrup with its sugar-free option.
- Reduce the pumps of the regular syrups.
- Substitute the Milk with Oat milk, skim milk, almond milk, or half-and-half. (Coconut milk is extremely rich in fat)
- Reduce the quantity of milk to lower calories and sugar.
- Prioritize espresso and coffee first, then reduce the syrups and toppings to help decrease the calories and sugar.
- If you want a drink with a low sugar and calorie content that is not on the list above, then always order it customized. This way, you can take control and make it as it would suit your diet.
- Also, you can mix your Starbucks beverage with protein powder. This can increase the amount of protein per drink.
- Do not add whipped cream or sprinkles on top.
Final Thoughts

Remember, the battle is not lost if your favorite drink is not on this list.
You can always modify it to keep its flavor and make it more useful.
Ask the barista on shift to tell you each ingredient and then substitute them if necessary. This can be milk, syrup, whipped cream, drizzles, or sprinkles.
