Affogato Shot Recipe

Delicious coffee-based pastries are a specialty of the Italians, and you have probably heard of at least one of them. But do you have any idea what an affogato shot is? In fact, there are two commonly accepted definitions: a traditional and a Starbucks version.

Both will be discussed in this article.

You will know what this espresso treat is and how to create it once you have finished reading it.

Also, you will find out what an affogato al caffè or a grande latte affogato is.

Do you also know how to make an affogato shot

Those who favor Starbucks may not find an affogato unusual, but that does not imply you know how to consume it properly.

What Is An Affogato Shot?

Affogato is the name of an espresso-based dessert that means ‘drowned’ in Italian.

Pouring an espresso shot over a ball of ice cream creates an affogato (usually vanilla gelato). If you want, you can also add a dose of liqueur, such as Frangelico, Baileys, or amaretto.

A traditional affogato is served in a glass with a teaspoon.

Affogato Shot At Starbucks

Starbucks has put its own spin on the original affogato coffee, as they do with every classic coffee. It is just a frappuccino served as an affogato.

Affogato is now available for any frappuccino on the menu. The brewer will top off the drink with a shot of coffee.

The coffee provides a beautiful marbled look as it mixes with the frappe iced coffee, syrup, milk, and whipped cream.

What Is Affogato Style Shot At Starbucks?

An affogato style shot is basically an espresso shot poured last or on top of something.

For example, if you order a tall latte affogato, instead of adding the shot of espresso to the cup first and then adding the milk, the barista will first add the milk and then pour the espresso shot on top of it.

How To Order Affogato Style Shot At Starbucks (Secret Menu)?

Affogato drinks and desserts are popular due to the juxtaposition of hot and cold temperatures, as well as their appealing look.

Although vanilla is often associated with an affogato, feel free to experiment with different flavors, such as caramel or coffee Frappuccinos, if you want to make them a bit stronger.

Caramel Affogato

A Venti Vanilla Bean Frappuccino Affogato is the perfect way to start your day.

Affogato shot Starbucks is an espresso shot put on top of your drink. Request that the brewer pours caramel sauce into the bottom of the cup and swirl it up the sides. Finish the coffee with a Caramel Drizzle and Caramel Crunch Topping once the affogato shot has been poured on top. Remember to thank and tip your brewer for creating a gorgeous Italian dessert to take with you!

Affogato Frappuccino

An affogato comes in three flavors: Vanilla Bean, Caramel, and Mocha. You may ask for any Frappuccino to be served affogato-style if you want an additional shot of espresso to help you get through the day. Know that your barista will know just what to do.

As you may have guessed, every Starbucks Frappuccino you order affogato-style will contain caffeine.
A shot of espresso includes 75 mg of caffeine on its own. You are adding it to a Frappuccino that may already contain caffeine.

A tall Affogato-Style Mocha Frappuccino, for example, has 130 mg of caffeine — 75 mg from the espresso and 55 mg from the Frapp itself.

If you need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon, this dessert-like drink is for you.

Step-by-Step Recipe for Affogato Shot

Ingredients

For 2 pieces, you will need:

  • 2-4 scoops vanilla ice cream or hazelnut ice cream;
  • 2 shots espresso;
  • ½ ounce Bailey’s Irish Cream or Frangelico (optional).

The essential thing here is the good-quality gelato. If you can’t get it, I recommend a high-quality vanilla bean ice cream.

If you are not afraid of calories, you can always make cold foam as a topping.

Instructions

Step 1 – After you have all the ingredients, put 2 scoops of ice cream in your cup.
Step 2 – Pour over the ice cream ½ ounce Bailey’s Irish Cream.
Step 3 – Pour over the two Espresso Shots.

Serve right away.

Note that if you want your Affogato shot with fewer calories, you can put less ice cream in your cup. Also, you can use only 1 Espresso Shot or more. Make it whatever you like it.

I prefer it with more coffee and less ice cream (because of the calories 😀 ).

TIPS for Affogato Shot

  • Serve an affogato in a tiny glass cup or a small mug with a dollop of ice cream. If you use a large cup or mug, the espresso will not blend with the ice cream. Presenting glasses are one of the essential things you should look for.
  • To make this dish even more luxurious, shave a little chocolate on top of the ice cream.
  • This delicacy is best eaten with a spoon, scooping up the espresso and melting the gelato together.
  • Pour the espresso into the cup of gelato or ice cream when it’s ready to eat.
  • An affogato is traditionally made with vanilla or fior di latte gelato. But you may use whatever sort of gelato or ice cream you prefer.
  • Coffee. My advice is to use 3-4 tablespoons of strong brewed coffee or espresso coffee (100% arabica is excellent). Utilize an Italian Moka pot or coffee machine to prepare the coffee.
  • Adding a liqueur depends on your personal taste. I like to add a dash of liqueur-like Nocino or Frangelico (nut liqueur), a coffee-based liqueur, or Cointreau to my cocktails.
  • Toppings are also optional. If you want to add a touch of crunch, chopped hazelnuts or grated chocolate are excellent on top.

F.A.Q.

What does the affogato shot mean at Starbucks?

Affogato style at Starbucks is an espresso shot put on top of your drink. Request that the barista pours caramel sauce into the bottom of the cup and swirl it up the sides. Finish the coffee with a Caramel Drizzle and Caramel Crunch Topping once the affogato shot has been poured on top.

What is the difference between affogato and espresso?

Espresso is a strong coffee beverage. To make it, you run hot water under high pressure through finely-ground coffee. On the other hand, an affogato is a drink or dessert topped with espresso and, on occasion, caramel or chocolate sauce.

What does affogato mean in Italian?

“Affogato” is derived from the Italian verb “affogare,” which means “to sink.” Affogatos have their origins in Italy. Gelato is virtually drenched with espresso in this dessert.

Affogatos are typically served after lunch or supper in Italy. They are created with high-quality coffee with a bean that complements the ice cream’s creamy flavor. They do not use instant coffee at all.

How much caffeine is in an affogato shot?

It only has 75 mg of caffeine, which comes entirely from the espresso shot. A long Affogato-Style Caramel Frappuccino includes 125 mg of caffeine. If you need a pick-me-up, that is about the same as a tall Starbucks iced coffee. Finally, if you really want to go all out, a tall Affogato-Style Mocha Frappuccino has 130 mg of caffeine. That will give you a significant caffeine boost.

Is an affogato a dessert or a drink?

Some coffee purists consider an Affogato as one of the classic espresso-based beverages. But others think that it is more a dessert.

While I understand the argument for classifying it as a drink, justifying it when an affogato is served with a spoon and drizzled with chocolate syrup becomes a little more challenging.

Depending on the location, an affogato is often served with biscotti and fruit, accentuating the dessert part of the drink.

What’s the difference between gelato and ice cream?

Both of them are popular frozen desserts. Gelato is more delicious and softer. The ice cream has a lower fat content and a higher fat content. Although both are high in sugar, gelato is usually produced with far less fat. Both may be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation and only on rare occasions. However, like with any high-sugar, high-calorie item, it’s better to keep your intake in check for the best health.

Final words

Affogato is a thick and delicious espresso coffee and ice cream or gelato combo. It is simple to set up and may be modified or ingredients added to fit your preferences. The only qualities needed to make an Affogato are the opportunity to make coffee and the ability to consume ice cream rapidly. It will all melt into a mushy puddle if you wait too long, so grab your spoon and quickly. It will not be waiting for you for long.

Affogato is a delightful and refreshing meal that may be served as a dessert or a drink. If you’ve mastered the art of eating an affogato, do not hesitate to get one to savor after lunch or supper. You may also manufacture it yourself.
